Crete Country Stays

Our Story in the Cretan Hills

Crete Country Stays began not as a business but as a rescue. Watching the old houses of our grandparents fall silent, their shutters closing one by one as families drifted toward the towns, we resolved to give these stone dwellings a second life. What started with a single restored cottage in a mountain village has grown into a carefully tended collection of traditional homes, each one returned to warmth by hands that know every crack in its walls. We are farmers, builders, cooks and storytellers, bound together by a love for the interior of this island and a stubborn belief that its way of life is worth preserving.

Everything we do is guided by respect for authenticity. We refuse to strip the character from a house in the name of convenience; instead we work slowly, saving the arched doorways, the timber beams darkened by centuries of woodsmoke, the hand-cut flagstones worn smooth by generations of feet. Around these bones we weave gentle comfort, so that a guest enjoys a proper bed, hot water and a well-equipped kitchen without ever losing the sense of sleeping inside living history. Our craftsmen are local, our materials are honest, and our stone comes from the same hillsides that framed the original homes.

Above all, we are hosts. When you stay with us you become part of the village for a while, greeted in the square, invited to the harvest, sent home with jars of oil and honey and memories that outlast any souvenir. By sharing these places we keep them alive, channelling visitors' warmth and support back to the shepherds, potters, weavers and grandmothers who are the true keepers of Cretan tradition. That is the quiet purpose behind every welcome we offer, and it is a purpose we intend to carry faithfully into the years ahead for every guest who chooses our doorstep.
